Support LGBTQIA+ women in Uganda through the Helsinki Pride Community's Solidarity Progra
The Helsinki Pride Community's Solidarity Program aims to support particularly vulnerable LGBTQIA+ individuals, mainly when political conditions restrict human rights and people's ability to advocate for their rights. The funded initiatives align with the Helsinki Pride Community's strategy, focusing on the rights, inclusion, and well-being of sexual and gender minorities.
The situation regarding LGBTQ+ rights in Uganda is extremely concerning. A law that came into effect in 2024 criminalizes all sexual acts between people of the same sex, and includes the death penalty for the offense of “aggravated homosexuality.” This legal change significantly impacts the safety of LGBTQ+ refugees, as Uganda is among the world's largest refugee-hosting countries. According to the law, promoting the rights of sexual and gender minorities can result in a prison sentence of over 20 years.
In 2025, the Solidarity Program will raise donations for Uganda, directed to the organization FARUG.
Freedom and Roam Uganda (FARUG) is a Lesbian, Bisexual and Queer (LBQTI) diverse persons and womxn’s rights organisation based in Uganda and established in 2003. FARUG is the oldest sorely Lesbian, Bisexual and Queer womxn organization in Africa that has been actively leading and organizing sexual orientation and gender identity through lobbying, dialogue to create and facilitate greater visibility and voice.
FARUG is a feminist organization that reinforces feminist culture and principles, equality of womxn as stipulated in human rights and international instruments. We challenge male chauvinism, patriarchy, and cultures that aim at oppressing womxn. We create womxn autonomous spaces, challenge heteronomativity, and forge solidarity.
FARUG is a non-profit organization that depends entirely on donations and funding from partners and well-wishers to finance our activities for social change. Donations from individuals and/or groups are requested to help fund FARUG projects and programs promoting the target group’s rights, social justice, and well-being.
Seta ry will give the earnings of this campaign in its entirety to its member organisation, Helsinki Pride Community ry, which will transfer the donations to the beneficiary of this campaign.
